Rita Engedalen writes and performs her own music, inspired by raw Mississippi blues and American roots music. On her trips to Mississippi she got to know Big Jack Johnson, Super Chikan and Jessie Mae Hemphill, among others, and Hemphill became a close friend.
She made her recording debut as a blues artist in 2004 with “Hear My Song” and won the Spellemann award (the Norwegian Grammy) for “Heaven Ain’t Ready for Me Yet” in 2006. In 2010 she received the Notodden Blues Festival’s Blues Award and the Gammleng Prize, in 2012 she and her band won the European Blues Challenge in Berlin, and in 2016 she joined the Blues Walk of Fame in Notodden.
She has since released “Sun Will Come” (2022), and “My Precious Blues” (2023) with Margit Bakken in the project Women in Blues.
